Late Afternoon With the Newspaper, and Abuela's Lap Was Already Taken
Late-afternoon light slips through the curtains and falls across the folded newspaper in Abuela's hand. She sits on the couch in a gray cardigan and rose-print apron, eyes lowered to the page, the hint of a smile on her lips. Curled heavily across her lap is Chispa, her coat a riot of soft black and white curls, head resting on Abuela's arm and eyes closed in deep contentment. A potted plant, a teacup on the windowsill and a glimpse of the kitchen behind them make the room feel warm and still, the kind of quiet that only happens late in the day.
The Havanese coat can be wavy, curly or straight, and the curly type especially needs consistent grooming. Brushing several times a week, working down to the skin with a pin brush or comb, helps prevent mats from forming, particularly behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar. Some owners keep their dogs in a shorter puppy cut for easier care, while others enjoy the full fluffy look. Either way, regular trims around the eyes and paws keep a Havanese comfortable. Grooming sessions double as cuddle time, and many of these dogs love the attention.
The news might be good or bad today, but with a warm, sleeping dog on her lap, Abuela has already found the best story in the house.
