Abuela Drifted Off in Her Recliner. Chispa Found the Best Spot in the Room.

The TV is off, the remote is somewhere nearby, and Abuela has drifted into a deep afternoon nap. She leans back in her brown recliner, head tipped against the cushion, still wearing her olive T-shirt and floral apron with her reading glasses hooked on the front. On the wide, padded armrest, Chispa has made herself at home, stretched out with her chin resting on her paws and her eyes squeezed shut. A potted pothos sits on the TV stand, a plaid blanket is folded on a shelf, and a basket of laundry waits patiently in the corner of the sunny room.

Many dogs love to perch on armrests and the backs of couches because these spots keep them close to their people and give them a good view of the room. For small dogs, though, jumping on and off furniture repeatedly can strain the back and knees over time, and a fall from a reclining chair can cause injury. A sturdy pet step or ramp beside favorite seats makes getting up and down easier and safer. Also check that a recliner's footrest and mechanism are clear before closing it, since small paws and tails can get caught.

For now, there is nowhere to be and nothing that can't wait. Two nappers, one chair and a quiet house add up to a perfect afternoon.
