The Garden Chores Were Done. The Green Porch Swing Did the Rest.
A green wooden porch swing creaks gently in the afternoon breeze, and both of its passengers have nodded off. Abuela leans back against the slats in a blue T-shirt and floral apron, eyes closed and face completely relaxed. One arm is wrapped around Chispa, who is curled against her chest on a soft tan blanket, chin tucked and fur rumpled from the warmth of the nap. Out in the yard, gardening clutter tells the story of the morning: a blue watering can, potted seedlings, a basket of gloves, a pair of work boots and a few tools resting by a raised bed.
A nap after a morning of gardening can be restorative, and having a pet close by often makes it even more relaxing. Many people find the warmth and gentle breathing of a sleeping dog calming. For dogs, sleeping near their person is a sign of comfort and trust. If you share naps outdoors, watch for strong afternoon sun and make sure your dog can get to shade and water. A blanket like this one helps keep a small dog warm in a cool breeze, and it protects the swing from fur. Small dogs on a swing should be able to hop down safely or be lifted off.
The weeds can wait, and so can the watering. Right now, the swing, the breeze and a dozing little dog are all that matter.
