Abuela Climbed Into Her Old Pickup. She Didn't Expect Two Fluffy Passengers.

AI imagehavanesepickup truckroad trip

One hand on the big thin steering wheel and a grin spreading across her face, Abuela is ready to roll in her vintage pickup. She wears a gray T-shirt, her floral apron and a seat belt, and the tan bench seat beside her is crowded with fluffy company. Chispa, in a blue collar, sits right at her elbow and leans in for a sniff of her apron, while a second black and white Havanese peeks in from the passenger side, just as curious. Through the windshield, a stucco house, potted plants and a broom leaning by the door glow in warm afternoon light.

Riding along on errands can be exciting for a dog, and a few simple steps make it much safer. Loose pets can be thrown forward during a sudden stop, and small dogs can be badly hurt by airbags in the front seat. A crash-tested harness attached to a seat belt, or a secured carrier, is a far better option, ideally in the back seat or a rear row when the vehicle has one. Keep windows cracked only slightly so heads stay inside, and never leave dogs alone in a parked vehicle on a warm day, since the inside heats up quickly.

Wherever this truck is headed, the crew is clearly excited about it. A trip to the market is a lot more fun with two furry co-pilots on board.
