Grandpa Needed a Pillow for His Lawn Nap. He Found the Perfect One.
Sometimes the best bed in the house is the backyard lawn. Grandpa has stretched out on the grass in khaki trousers and a beige sweater vest, his cheek resting gently against Mochi's soft back, eyes closed in perfect peace. The black pug lies curled on the cool grass, his own eyes shut, apparently perfectly content to serve as a pillow. Around them, the yard is green and a little wild: a wooden fence draped with vines, terra-cotta pots and flowers along the edge, a blue watering can, and some garden tools left where they were last used.
Napping outdoors with a dog sounds idyllic, and it can be, with a few precautions. Pugs and other flat-faced breeds struggle to cool themselves, so a shady patch of grass on a mild day is much safer than full afternoon sun. Grass can also hide fleas and ticks, especially in warmer months, so regular parasite prevention matters for any dog who loves lounging in the yard. Many people also check their own skin and their pet's coat after time on the lawn. Be cautious about lawns that were recently treated with fertilizers or weed killers, as dogs can lick these off their paws. Your vet can recommend the right prevention plan for your area.
For this pair, though, the only real decision of the day was where to lie down. They chose the same spot, as usual, and the afternoon drifted by to the sound of birds and two very relaxed snores.
