The Porch Light Was Still On When Mochi Started Staring at Grandpa's Mug

First light is just reaching the street, and the porch lamp is still glowing. Grandpa sits on the worn wooden steps in a gray knit sweater, both hands around a cream ceramic mug, taking a slow first sip. Mochi sits at his feet on the walkway, head tilted back, mouth slightly open, eyes shining up at the cup as if it might contain something for him. A pair of work boots rests beside the steps, a jacket and a leash are draped nearby, and fallen leaves dot the ground among potted plants and a basket of odds and ends.

Coffee is one morning ritual dogs should only watch. Caffeine is toxic to dogs, and even small amounts from coffee, grounds, or tea bags can cause restlessness, a racing heart, or worse in a small breed like a pug. Keep mugs out of reach when you set them down on steps or low tables, and toss used grounds where a curious nose can't find them. If you'd like your dog to share the moment, a few kibble pieces or a chew toy works well. Mornings are also a great time for a pug's walk, since cooler air is easier on short-nosed breeds than the heat of midday. If your dog ever gets into coffee, call your vet right away.

Mochi will settle for company instead of coffee, and that seems to suit him. The neighborhood is quiet, the mug is warm, and the day hasn't asked anything of either of them yet.
