The Sky Turned Peach and Gold, and Two Old Friends Settled In for the Show
The sky has turned peach and gold over the treetops, and two old friends have settled in for the evening show. Grandpa sits in a webbed lawn chair in his olive fishing vest and gray T-shirt, white mustache catching the last light as he gazes toward the horizon. Domino sits close at his side, spotted head held high, ears soft, looking out in the very same direction as if he, too, appreciates a good sunset. An empty striped lawn chair waits beside them, and the clapboard house behind them glows with warm light from the window.
Dalmatians are striking dogs, and one thing many people don't know about them is that the breed has a higher than average rate of hereditary deafness, in one or both ears. Responsible breeders often have puppies' hearing tested at a young age. Dogs with hearing loss can live full, happy lives, and many owners use hand signals instead of verbal commands, along with gentle touches or vibrations to get their attention. A deaf dog should always be kept on a leash or in a secure area outdoors, since it can't hear traffic or calls to come back. If you're unsure about your dog's hearing, your vet can help.
Whether Domino hears the crickets starting up or simply feels the evening cooling around him, he's exactly where he wants to be. Sunset is better with someone to share it with.
