Grandpa Was Watering the Geraniums With a Very Proud Assistant
A gentle shower of water falls from the spout of the old metal watering can, soaking the flower bed and making the pink geraniums glisten. Grandpa bends over the garden in his gray shirt, khaki shorts, and trusty fishing vest, pockets bulging with tools, his white mustache drooping in quiet concentration. Domino sits right beside him in a blue collar, mouth open in a wide, happy grin, looking up as if to say he's helping. Pots of flowers line the side of the house, and a pair of rubber boots and a coiled hose wait by the wall.
Gardening is a peaceful hobby to share with a dog, with a few precautions. Some common garden plants aren't safe for dogs to chew. Geraniums, for instance, are listed as mildly toxic and can cause stomach upset or skin irritation, while others, like lilies of the valley, foxglove, and sago palm, are much more dangerous. Fertilizers, compost, and pest-control products can also be harmful. It's a good idea to check new plants before adding them and to store garden supplies out of reach. Dalmatians need plenty of fresh water every day, so set out a bowl of clean water for your helper while you work.
Domino may not know a geranium from a daisy, but he knows that wherever Grandpa goes, the day is better. A quiet garden and a loyal companion make for a lovely evening routine.
