Grandpa Sat Down in His Rocking Chair. He Looked Down and Decided Not to Rock.

Soft daylight drifts through the window, and the living room is wrapped in an easy stillness. Grandpa Earl sits back in a well-worn wooden rocking chair with his hands resting on the arms, a gentle smile tucked into his grey beard as he looks down at the floor. There, stretched out on the bare boards just in front of the chair, Peaches is fast asleep, her pink body curled into a loose comma, one ear tipped forward and her long tail looping behind her. A woven basket, a knit blanket, and a potted plant sit near the window, and a couple of toys lie scattered on the floor.

Sphynx cats are drawn to warmth, so a bare wooden floor isn't usually their first choice. A sunny patch of floorboards, though, can hold a surprising amount of heat. If your hairless cat likes napping near you on hard floors, a soft fleece mat or a heated pet pad designed for animals can make the spot cozier. With rocking chairs, there's an extra safety habit worth adopting: always glance down before rocking. Those curved runners can pinch a tail or paw in an instant, and cats often choose to sleep right beside their favorite person's chair. Placing a pet bed just to the side gives them closeness without the risk.

Earl seems perfectly content to stay still and let Peaches sleep. Some afternoons, the best thing to do with a rocking chair is not rock it at all.
