Ken Unwrapped His Sandwich on the Bench, and Duke Got Very Close
Evening string lights glow over the backyard, and Grandpa Ken has settled onto a weathered wooden bench with a hearty sandwich in hand. He's wearing a cream sweater vest over a blue plaid shirt and smiles down at his companion with a knowing look. Duke sits right in front of him, white chest puffed out, paws planted on the bench slats, wrinkled face tilted up toward the sandwich with an expression of utter longing. Potted succulents, a watering can, a cozy house with a glowing window, and a wooden fence make the scene feel calm and homey.
That hopeful stare is one of the most powerful tools in a dog's toolkit, but sandwiches aren't great for dogs. Many deli meats are salty and may contain seasonings like garlic or onion powder, which can be harmful. Cheese and mayonnaise can upset sensitive stomachs, and bread offers little nutritional value. If you want to share the moment, a few plain dog treats or a bit of unseasoned cooked chicken are better options. Teaching a calm 'settle' while you eat can also help your dog relax rather than beg, which makes mealtime nicer for everyone.
Ken may give in just a little, or he may hold firm, but either way, Duke will keep trying. Some friendships are built on loyalty, and some are built on hope for the last bite of a sandwich.
