Most People Bring a Towel to the Boardwalk. Edna Brought Something Fluffier.
The lamps along the boardwalk are just flickering on, and the ocean is a strip of dusky blue beyond the dunes. Edna and Frank have claimed a weathered bench, both in their matching cream cable-knit sweaters, with Frank in a navy cap pressing close to her side. Edna holds Duchess snugly on her lap, one arm wrapped around her, and the cat sits upright with her fluffy tail draped down and her round eyes half closed against the sea breeze. Beach bags, sandals, and a tote lie on the boards nearby, and a few people stroll in the distance.
Taking a cat on an outing like this calls for careful planning. A secure carrier is the safest way to get a cat to and from the car, and a well-fitted harness with a leash is a good backup once you settle in, since unfamiliar sounds like gulls, waves, and passing crowds can startle even calm cats into bolting. Breezy, cool evenings are kinder than hot afternoons, especially for a flat-faced breed like the Persian, which can struggle in heat. Sand and salt can get trapped in a long coat, so plan for a good brushing back home. Check local rules, too, as some beaches restrict pets.
Edna and Frank came for the sea air and the sunset, and they got both, with a warm armful of fluff to make it even better. Not every boardwalk bench comes with such a glamorous companion.
