Persians Are Known for Lounging. Nobody Told Duchess That.

Nobody told Duchess that Persians are supposed to be couch potatoes. In the backyard, Earl holds up a small blue ball with a huge grin on his face, his plaid shirt and overalls rumpled and his gray hair sticking up in every direction. Duchess is caught mid-pounce, front paws reaching forward, long white fur flying, and her copper eyes locked onto the ball with fierce determination. Behind them, a garden hose, a stack of firewood, a pile of jackets on a chair, a green watering can, and a glowing porch light set the scene for a lively evening.

It surprises many people, but plenty of cats enjoy playing fetch. Some will chase and bring back small balls, crinkly toys, or even hair ties all on their own. Play is important for a cat's physical and mental health, helping prevent boredom, weight gain, and some behavior problems. Persians are generally calm, but most still enjoy short bursts of activity. Try wand toys, soft balls, and toys that mimic the movement of prey. A few play sessions of ten to fifteen minutes a day is a good goal for many cats. Avoid string or small parts that could be swallowed, and always put interactive toys away afterward.

Earl clearly did not expect such an energetic playmate, but he looks thrilled about it. One thing is certain: in this backyard, Duchess is redefining what a Persian can do.
