Grandpa Earl Kept Shoveling the Driveway. Part of the Snowbank Kept Moving.

Fresh snow blankets the driveway, and the porch light glows warm against the deep blue dusk. Earl, bundled in a gray knit cap and plaid flannel under his overalls, leans into his snow shovel and scoops another heavy load. Right beside the blade, Duchess has burrowed into the snowbank, her white fur almost disappearing into the drifts. Only her round face, golden eyes, and a puff of tail give her away. She looks both delighted and slightly offended that the snow keeps moving. Snow-covered evergreens and a wooden fence line the quiet yard behind them.

Some cats enjoy a brief romp in the snow, but cold weather calls for caution. Even with a thick coat, cats can get chilled quickly, especially if their fur gets wet. Keep winter outings short and supervised, and bring your cat inside if they start shivering or holding up their paws. Wipe paws after time outdoors to remove ice, salt, and de-icing chemicals, which can irritate skin and are harmful if licked. Antifreeze is especially dangerous, as it tastes sweet and is highly toxic, so clean up any spills right away. Long-haired cats may collect snowballs in their fur, so a towel and a gentle brush help.

Earl's shoveling may take a little longer with a fluffy helper underfoot, but the job is clearly more fun this way. A snowy evening, a porch light, and a playful cat make winter chores feel a lot lighter.
