Grandpa Set Out Breakfast for One on the Patio. Duchess Pulled Up a Seat.

Breakfast is served on the backyard patio: buttered toast, a heap of scrambled eggs, a few fresh strawberries and blueberries, and a big white mug of black coffee. Earl sits at the table in his olive shirt and overalls, leaning forward with a warm, crinkly smile. His dining companion has made herself very much at home. Duchess sits beside him with both front paws planted on the table, her long white whiskers fanned out and her golden eyes gazing up at him in polite expectation. A wooden fence, potted plants, and a gray morning sky frame the backyard.

Many cats love to join their people at mealtime, mostly out of curiosity and the hope of a tasty morsel. A small amount of plain, cooked egg without butter or salt can be an occasional treat for most healthy cats, since it is a good source of protein. However, many breakfast items are not cat-friendly. Coffee contains caffeine, which is toxic to cats, and buttered toast offers no nutritional value. Grapes and raisins should be kept away from pets in general. If your cat begs at the table, a cat-specific treat or a small portion of their regular food served nearby can satisfy their curiosity safely.

Duchess is the very picture of good table manners, or at least her version of them. Earl seems more than happy to have a breakfast buddy, and his patio mornings are clearly better with her company.
