Every Morning Grandpa Earl Takes His Coffee to the Front Steps. He's Never Alone.
Dawn is still blue and quiet as the porch light glows above the door. Earl sits on the concrete front steps in his denim shirt and overalls, holding a white mug of coffee with both hands and gazing down with a soft, sleepy smile. Duchess has parked herself on the step just below him, front and center, her long white fur slightly ruffled and her copper eyes staring straight ahead with a famously flat-faced, no-nonsense expression. Flower pots line the walkway, and a wooden fence and leafy trees fade into the early morning shadows.
Cats are creatures of routine, and many happily build their day around their owner's habits. If you sit on the same step with your coffee every morning, there is a good chance your cat will start showing up for it too. That said, coffee itself should be kept well away from pets. Caffeine is toxic to cats, and even small amounts from a spilled mug or used grounds can cause symptoms like restlessness, rapid heartbeat, or tremors. Set your mug somewhere out of reach when you get up, and dispose of grounds and filters in a covered bin. If you think your cat has consumed caffeine, contact your vet right away.
Earl gets his first sip of the day, and Duchess gets her favorite seat right by his feet. It is a simple ritual, but for the two of them, it seems like the perfect way to welcome the morning.
