Grandpa Earl Dropped His Line Off the Old Dock. His Persian Was Expecting Results.

The old wooden dock creaks under Earl's weight as he sits at the edge, a bamboo fishing pole held loosely in his hands and the line dipping into the dark water below. His plaid shirt is faded, his overalls are speckled with paint, and his grin behind his glasses is pure contentment. Duchess sits beside him on the weathered boards, upright and attentive, gazing up at his face with wide copper eyes as if asking when the fish will arrive. A vegetable garden, a wooden trellis, and scattered tools fill the yard behind them.

There is a reason cats and fishing go together in so many old stories. Cats are drawn to the smell and movement of fish, and many will happily wait for a catch. Still, a dock can be a risky spot for a cat. Fishing hooks, lures, and line are serious hazards, since a curious cat can swallow line or get a hook caught in a paw or mouth. Keep tackle boxes closed and never leave baited hooks lying around. Raw fish is also not recommended for cats, as it can carry parasites and bacteria. Plain cooked fish without bones, in small amounts, is a safer occasional treat.

Earl might not catch anything today, but with Duchess watching his every move, the afternoon is already a success. Sometimes the best part of fishing is simply the company you keep on the dock.
