Grandpa Ken Grabbed the Shovel After the Storm. His Boxer Thought It Was Playtime.

Fresh snow blankets the front walk, and Grandpa Ken has his shovel and gloves ready. He has barely cleared a path before Rocco comes bounding through the drift, chest low, front legs splayed, and mouth open in a huge happy grin. The Boxer clearly thinks every scoop of snow is being thrown just for him. Ken peers down over his glasses with a look that is half exasperation and half delight. Snow-covered shrubs, a pair of boots, a woven basket, and a few storage bins line the porch behind them.

Many Boxers love romping in snow, but they are a short-coated breed without much insulation, so they can get cold quickly. A fitted dog coat or sweater can help on frigid days, and keeping outdoor play sessions short is wise. After coming inside, wipe the paws to remove ice balls, salt, and de-icing chemicals, which can irritate pads and be harmful if licked. Pet-safe ice melt is a good choice for driveways and walkways. For the person holding the shovel, take breaks, lift small loads, and push snow rather than heaving it, since snow shoveling can be strenuous.

The driveway might take twice as long with Rocco helping, but the job is a lot more cheerful. Ken will have a clear path eventually. Rocco will have had the best morning of his winter.
