Grandpa Ken Climbed Into His Old Pickup for Errands. His Co-Pilot Was Already Waiting.

The cab of the old pickup has cracked brown leather seats and a thin, well-worn steering wheel, and it is clearly a truck that has carried many loads over the years. Today its most important cargo is Mochi. The fluffy cream Havanese sits upright in the passenger seat, her shaggy face filling the frame, dark button eyes looking out with calm curiosity and a little red collar peeking from her fur. Grandpa Ken sits behind the wheel in a brown sweater vest and plaid shirt, glasses on, grinning at her with clear delight. Through the windows, a garage door and potted plants on the driveway hint that they are just heading out.

Car trips are much safer when small dogs are secured. A tiny dog like a Havanese can be badly hurt by a sudden stop, and passenger-side airbags are not designed with pets in mind. A crash-tested harness clipped to a seatbelt, a secured travel crate, or a booster seat designed for small dogs in the back seat are all safer options. Havanese are adaptable, people-loving dogs, so many enjoy tagging along on errands, but they should never be left alone in a parked vehicle, where temperatures can climb quickly even on mild days.

Mochi looks like she takes her co-pilot role very seriously, and Ken seems to enjoy the company more than the drive itself.

Errands are always better with a fluffy navigator keeping an eye on the road.
