Grandpa Ken Took Mochi to the Farmers Market. She Insisted on Being Front and Center.
White canopies line the market aisle, and the stalls are overflowing with crates of tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and leafy greens. Grandpa Ken walks along in a green sweater vest, blue shirt, and khaki trousers, a black leash looped in one hand and a wristwatch on the other, smiling warmly behind his glasses. Mochi stands right in front of him, her shaggy cream face filling the frame, nose glistening and dark eyes curious as she takes in the busy scene. A few shoppers and canvas bags drift by in the background.
Farmers markets can be a fun socialization outing for a friendly dog like a Havanese, which tends to enjoy meeting new people. Before you go, check whether the market welcomes dogs, and bring water and a few treats. Keep the leash short in crowded aisles, since small dogs can be stepped on easily, and consider carrying your dog if things get too busy. Watch the ground for dropped food, as onions, grapes, and rich baked goods are not safe for dogs. If your dog seems stressed by the noise or crowds, a quieter corner or a short visit is perfectly fine.
Mochi looks fully engaged with the market, as if she is personally inspecting the produce for quality. Ken seems happy to let her set the pace.
A bag of fresh vegetables and a happy little dog on the leash: that is a successful Saturday morning.
