Grandpa Ken Went Out to Check on His Pumpkins. Mochi Made It the Best Walk of the Year.

Bright orange pumpkins are scattered among tangled vines and dry autumn leaves, and Grandpa Ken is strolling right through the middle of the patch with a big, delighted laugh. He wears an olive cable-knit sweater vest over a blue shirt and khaki pants, glasses slipping down as he grins at his companion. Mochi trots happily at his side, her fluffy cream coat bouncing, mouth open in a wide, joyful pant, eyes bright as she looks up at him. Behind them, clay pots, a wooden fence, and a few more pumpkins dot the sunny backyard garden.

Fall is a wonderful season for outdoor walks with a small dog, and a pumpkin patch is full of interesting smells. A few seasonal notes are worth keeping in mind. Plain cooked pumpkin is often used in small amounts in dog diets, but raw stems, moldy pumpkins, and spiced pumpkin desserts are better avoided. Fallen leaves and garden debris can hide sharp sticks, burrs, or mushrooms, and a long-coated Havanese can pick up a lot of plant matter. A quick brush and paw check after autumn walks helps keep the coat tangle-free. If your dog eats something unusual from the garden, check in with your vet.

Ken's laugh says this is one of his favorite times of year, and Mochi's bouncing step suggests she agrees completely.

A crisp autumn day, a garden full of pumpkins, and a happy little dog at your heels. Fall does not get much better.
