Grandpa Ken Was Watering His Petunias. Mochi Sat Down Right in the Splash Zone.
A silver watering can tips forward and sends a gentle shower over a bed of pink petunias, purple violas, and orange marigolds. Grandpa Ken bends over the flowers in an olive sweater vest and blue plaid shirt, glasses low on his nose, carefully giving every blossom its share. Mochi sits right in front of the bed, her shaggy cream face turned up toward the camera with an innocent, curious look, the falling water sparkling just beside her ear. A coiled garden hose, a blue bucket, garden gloves, pots of soil, and a trowel scatter the busy backyard around them.
Gardens and small dogs can share space happily with a little planning. Some popular garden plants can be harmful if chewed, so it is worth checking which flowers and shrubs you grow before letting a dog explore freely. Fertilizers, mulch, slug bait, and weed killers should be stored securely and used carefully, since dogs may lick their paws after walking through treated areas. A Havanese's long coat can also pick up soil, seeds, and burrs, so a quick brush after garden time helps keep tangles away.
Mochi seems content to supervise from a safe distance, keeping out of the mud and close to Ken. She might just get a few stray drops for her trouble.
A row of bright flowers and a fluffy garden buddy: small joys that make every watering trip worthwhile.
