A Gray Winter Day, a Patchwork Quilt, and One Calico Who Found the Best Seat
Gray light presses against the window, but next to the fireplace it is all amber and orange. Abuela Rosa has pulled a patchwork quilt around her shoulders like a cape, its faded pinks, blues, and yellows framing her floral apron. Nestled in the folds on her lap, Canela peers out with round amber eyes, her fluffy white bib and patched coat glowing in the firelight. Behind them the shelves are crowded with yarn balls, a basket, little jars of knitting needles, and family keepsakes, the comfortable clutter of a home where winter afternoons are spent indoors.
Cats love heat, and a fireplace can feel like the best seat in the house. Their comfort zone runs warmer than ours, which is why they seek out sunny windowsills, laundry fresh from the dryer, and laps. Around a real fire, though, a little caution goes a long way. Use a sturdy fireplace screen so curious paws and fluffy tails cannot get near embers, and never leave a cat alone in a room with an open flame. Long fur can singe faster than you might expect, and a cat that naps too close may not notice right away. Candles deserve the same respect, especially on low tables where a swishing tail can tip them. A soft blanket at a safe distance from the hearth gives your cat all the warmth with none of the risk.
On a cold, gray day, a quilt, a crackling fire, and a purring calico add up to a kind of wealth that is hard to beat.
