Grandpa Hank Has a Very Serious Bedtime Routine for His Silver Tabby
It is bedtime, and Grandpa Hank is taking the job very seriously. He leans over a round, cushioned pet bed in his plaid shirt and fishing vest, gently folding a cream knitted blanket around Pewter's shoulders with both hands. His white mustache twitches with concentration as he tucks in the edges. The silver tabby peers up from his cozy nest with round golden eyes, looking slightly surprised by all the fuss but making no move to escape. The room around them is comfortably cluttered with stacks of folded laundry, a basket of yarn, a pair of slippers, a coffee mug, and a houseplant by the window.
Many cats enjoy having a bed of their own, especially one with raised sides they can curl up against. Cats feel most secure in enclosed spaces where their backs are protected, which is why they often love boxes, baskets, and bolstered beds. Soft blankets help them stay warm, and older cats in particular may appreciate extra cushioning for their joints. Washable bed covers make it easy to keep things clean, and placing the bed in a quiet, draft-free spot away from heavy foot traffic encourages regular use. Some cats will accept being tucked in, while others prefer to arrange their own bedding. Respect your cat's preferences, and never wrap a cat so tightly that it cannot move freely or get out when it wants to.
Pewter may climb out the moment Hank turns off the lamp, but for now he is tucked in snug and well loved. Some bedtime routines are as much for the person as for the cat.
