Grandpa Hank Went to the Farmers Market for Carrots. He Didn't Go Alone.
Saturday morning at the farmers market, and Grandpa Hank has brought his favorite shopping companion. He stands under a canvas tent among crates of carrots, green beans, cucumbers, and leafy greens, grinning wide beneath his white mustache. Cradled securely against his olive fishing vest, Pewter looks around at the bustle with alert, curious eyes, one paw resting on Hank's arm and his silver stripes shining in the soft overcast light. A blue tote bag of vegetables, woven baskets, cardboard boxes, and burlap sacks surround them, and little houses line the street behind the stalls.
Fresh produce is great for people, and a few vegetables can be safe occasional snacks for cats, though cats do not need them. Small amounts of plain cooked carrot, green beans, or cucumber are generally considered safe, while onions, garlic, leeks, and chives are toxic to cats in any form, including powders. Bringing a cat to a busy market is a different matter. Crowds, dogs, loud noises, and unfamiliar smells can be stressful, and a startled cat can slip out of your arms in an instant. If your cat truly enjoys outings, a well-fitted harness and leash or a secure carrier is essential, and short visits during quieter hours are best. Many cats are happiest experiencing market day by sniffing the bags once you get home.
Pewter seems to be taking it all in stride today. With Hank holding him close, the farmers market is just one more place where they explore the world together.
