Frank Held Out His Hand and Said the Magic Word. Marion Couldn't Stop Smiling.
Training class is in session on the colorful patterned rug. Frank sits cross-legged in his cream sweater, gently holding Cocoa's raised front paw in both hands, his face soft with pride behind his glasses. Marion sits beside him, leaning in with a delighted smile, as if she cannot believe how quickly their girl is catching on. Cocoa sits upright between them, offering her paw politely, her curly chocolate coat fluffed and her attention fixed on Frank. A rope toy and a squeaky toy lie on the rug, and a basket of blankets, a stack of books, and a cozy couch fill the bright room behind them.
Shake is one of the simplest tricks to teach, and Poodles are especially good students thanks to their intelligence and eagerness to work with their people. A common approach is to ask the dog to sit, hold a treat in a closed hand near the dog's chest, and wait for the dog to paw at it. The moment the paw lifts, say the cue word, gently hold the paw, and reward. Keeping sessions short and upbeat helps a dog stay motivated, and ending on a success leaves everyone happy. Teaching new tricks is also great mental exercise for dogs of any age, and it is a fun, gentle activity for older adults to share with their pets.
Cocoa has clearly earned her treat, and Frank and Marion have a new trick to show off to anyone who visits. Not bad for an afternoon on the living room floor.
