Abuela Rosa Went to the Market Without a Basket. She Carried Something Better.

String lights twinkle overhead, and the little backyard market is bursting with color: crates of ripe tomatoes, avocados, squash, and peppers, a basket of fresh greens, and a bundle of garlic tucked into a tote bag. Abuela Rosa strolls through it all with a contented smile, but she isn't carrying a shopping basket. Instead, she's cradling Chispa against her chest like a treasured purchase, one hand supporting the cat's back legs. The grey Sphynx peers out over Rosa's arm with wide yellow-green eyes, ears up, taking in every new sight and smell with calm curiosity.

Not every cat would enjoy an outing like this, but Sphynx cats are often described as outgoing and social, and some adapt well to supervised trips when they're introduced slowly. Safety still comes first. A well-fitted harness and leash, or a secure carrier, is much safer than holding a cat loose in a busy place, since a startled cat can bolt in seconds. Hairless cats also need extra care outdoors: their exposed skin can sunburn, so shade and limited sun time are important, and they chill quickly when evenings cool down. Up-to-date vaccinations and identification are wise for any cat who leaves home.

Chispa may not be picking out produce, but she looks like she's enjoying the evening air. For Rosa, the best thing at the market is already in her arms.
