The TV Was Still On When Abuela Rosa Dozed Off. Then We Spotted the Armrest.
The TV is still on, the lamp casts a warm glow, and Abuela Rosa has quietly drifted off in her brown recliner, head tilted back, hands at rest over her pink-and-blue flowered apron. Right beside her, stretched along the broad armrest like a little grey sphinx statue, Chispa has also given in to sleep. Her chin rests on her front paws, wrinkled shoulders relaxed, eyes squeezed shut. A knitted throw hangs over the TV stand, the remote waits on the shelf, and family photos on the wall look down on a living room that feels lived-in and loved.
Cats are champion nappers, often sleeping a large part of the day, and they frequently choose spots next to their favorite people. For a Sphynx, staying close is also about warmth, since they gravitate toward body heat, electronics, and soft upholstery. Upholstered furniture does need a little extra care with hairless cats. Because their skin produces oils that fur would normally absorb, they can leave faint marks on fabric, which is one reason owners often bathe them regularly and lay washable throws over favorite spots. A cozy blanket on the armrest keeps both the chair and the cat happy.
Whatever show was on, neither of them caught the ending. Some evenings are just meant for dozing side by side in a quiet, lamp-lit room.
