Abuela Rosa Brought Her Old Bamboo Pole to the Dock. She Didn't Fish Alone.
The line is in the water, the bamboo pole rests easily in Abuela Rosa's hands, and she's in no hurry at all. Leaning on the weathered boards of the old dock, sunglasses pushed up into her silver hair, she smiles sideways at her fishing partner. Chispa sits upright on the planks beside her, wrinkled grey body poised, oversized ears tipped forward, golden eyes alert. Behind them, the backyard is lush and green, with pink geraniums spilling from terracotta pots and a tall wooden fence enclosing the garden.
Fishing and cats seem like a natural pairing, and many cats are certainly fascinated by the idea. Still, it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Fishhooks and fishing line are real hazards for curious pets; a cat that swallows line or a hooked lure needs a vet right away, and you shouldn't try to pull it out yourself. Raw fish isn't the treat it's often made out to be either, since it can carry parasites and some raw fish contains an enzyme that can affect a cat's vitamin levels over time. A small piece of plain, cooked, boneless fish is a much safer occasional reward.
Whether anything bites today doesn't really matter. The sun is warm, the boards are smooth, and Rosa has the most attentive fishing buddy on the whole water.
