Abuela Rosa Was Flipping Pancakes. Then She Counted the Faces on the Counter.
A golden pancake sizzles in the cast-iron skillet, and Abuela Rosa eases a spatula underneath it with practiced care. She's not cooking for a solo audience this morning. Chispa sits right beside the stove on the speckled countertop, wrinkled neck stretched, ears tall, eyes locked on the pan. Farther down the counter, a second grey Sphynx perches near the window like a backup judge, equally attentive and equally hopeful. A cup of wooden spoons, a potted herb, a paper towel roll, and a bowl of lemons crowd the cheerful green kitchen.
Cats on kitchen counters are a familiar sight in many homes, but around a hot stove it's worth setting some boundaries. Curious paws can touch burners or knock over hot pans, and Sphynx cats, who love warmth, may be especially drawn to a warm stovetop. Some owners give their cats a nearby perch, like a cat tree or a windowsill shelf, so they can watch the action safely, and reward them for staying there. As for pancakes, they aren't toxic in a tiny plain bite, but butter, syrup, and sugary toppings aren't good for cats. A cat treat makes a better breakfast reward.
Both cats are being remarkably patient. Rosa may just have to make one more small, plain pancake so nobody in this sunny little kitchen feels left out.
