Abuela Rosa Was Flipping Pancakes. Mango Showed the Best Manners in the Kitchen.
Morning light spills through the kitchen window onto a well-used gas stove. A skillet sizzles with a golden pancake, another pan waits on the back burner, and a stick of butter sits softening on a plate by the counter. Abuela Rosa, in a cream knit sweater and floral apron, slides her spatula under the edge with careful concentration. At her feet, Mango sits perfectly upright on the tile floor, head tilted back, eyes fixed on the pan. He is not pawing or meowing. He is simply waiting, the picture of good manners.
A cat who sits politely near the stove is adorable, but kitchens with active burners need some ground rules. Cats can jump onto counters and stovetops without warning, and hot pans, open flames, and spattering oil can cause painful burns. Turning pan handles inward, keeping a cat out of the cooking area with a closed door or a cozy spot elsewhere, and never leaving a lit burner unattended all help. As for pancakes, they are not toxic in a plain bite, but butter, syrup, and sugary batter are not good for cats, so a cat treat is the better reward.
Mango's patience may still be rewarded, though, just not with pancakes. A little jar of cat treats is surely tucked somewhere in this kitchen for exactly this reason. Once breakfast is served, her best-behaved kitchen helper will get his share too.
