Earl Poured a Cold Lemonade on the Deck. Custard Gave Him That Look.

Ice clinks in a tall glass of lemonade, a lemon slice pressed against the side, and Earl takes a slow, satisfied sip in the shade of the back deck. His glasses are pushed up into his white hair, and he looks completely at ease. Custard is planted front and center, her plush cream body filling the foreground and her copper eyes giving the camera what can only be described as a magnificent frown. Behind them, a cooler sits on the deck, a green watering can waits by the garden beds, and summer sunlight soaks the lawn beyond the railing.

That grumpy expression is mostly just the Exotic Shorthair's face. The breed's short nose, round cheeks, and large eyes often give them a permanently serious or pouty look, even when they are perfectly content. Their real temperament is usually mellow and affectionate. That same flat face, though, means they can struggle in hot weather, because a shorter airway makes it harder to cool down by breathing. On summer days, keep flat-faced cats in the shade or indoors, offer plenty of fresh water, and watch for heavy panting or sluggishness, which are good reasons to call your vet. Lemonade is for people only, as citrus and sugar are not a good match for cats.

Custard may look like she is filing a complaint, but she chose the spot right beside Earl's chair. On a hot afternoon, that says more than any expression could.
