Harold and Bea Set Out to Fix the Fence. Both Dogs Showed Up Ready to Work.
Broken pickets, a box of tools, and a full crew on the job. Harold and Bea work side by side in gray cable-knit sweaters, bent over a section of weathered wooden fence, Bea steadying a board while Harold lines up a nail. Up front, Peanut fills the foreground with her round dark eyes and tall ears, wearing a blue collar and a very serious expression. Just behind her, a scruffy brown dog stands proudly with a long stick clamped in its jaws, as if delivering the most important building supply of the day. Work boots, a tool basket, and scattered hardware cover the ground.
Home repair projects and dogs are a tricky mix. Nails, screws, splinters, and sharp tools are all hazards for curious paws and mouths, so it helps to set up the work area away from where the dogs roam, or keep them leashed nearby. Sticks are a favorite toy for many dogs, but they can splinter and injure the mouth or throat, so a sturdy rubber fetch toy is a safer swap. After any building job, sweeping the area for dropped nails is well worth the few extra minutes.
The fence may take an afternoon or two to fix, but there is no shortage of supervision. Harold and Bea have their hands full, the shaggy helper has its stick, and Peanut is keeping an extremely close eye on the camera.
