Gus Sat Down on the Porch Swing for a Minute. Pudding Had Other Plans.
The porch swing hangs still in the afternoon light, and Grandpa Gus has drifted off with his head tipped back against the cushion and his hands slack at his sides. His blue plaid shirt rises and falls with his breathing. Curled on his chest is Pudding, round and fluffy as a cream-colored cushion, face tucked down and eyes closed in complete contentment. A white railing, a watering can and a patch of green lawn blur softly behind them. One of the cat's paws hangs over a button of the shirt, a small sign of total ease, and the swing chain creaks softly overhead.
A purring cat on the chest is one of the most comforting sights there is, and many people find the rhythm of a cat's breathing relaxing. Pets can provide companionship and routine, which can be especially welcome for older adults. If a cat naps on you, make sure he can easily hop down, and be careful not to jostle him on a swing. Persians are happy lap cats, but they are heat-sensitive, so make sure he has shade and water nearby. Talk to your vet about comfort and care for older or long-haired cats.
There are few naps better than this one. The swing sways just slightly, and the yard is quiet. Gus and Pudding have agreed on a plan, which is to do absolutely nothing.
