Ruth and Harold Were Stuck on the Crossword. Miso Thought He Could Help.
The morning crossword is a team sport at this kitchen table, and today the team has an extra member sprawled right across the middle. Ruth, in a gray cardigan with her curly silver hair, rests her hand on the grid and smiles, while Harold, in a navy plaid shirt, leans over the puzzle with a pencil-ready look of concentration. Miso has made himself comfortable on the tabletop, his cream body stretched long beside the puzzle, his dark tail curling off one end and his blue eyes half lidded. Around them sit a cup of tea, sliced apples, a spare pair of glasses, folded napkins and a pencil within paw's reach.
Cats love to lie on whatever their people are paying attention to, whether it is a newspaper, a laptop or a puzzle. Part of it is warmth and part of it is simply wanting to be in the middle of things. Word puzzles are also a favorite pastime for many older adults, and they are a pleasant way to keep the mind active, practice recall and share a laugh together. If your cat insists on joining, a folded towel or small mat at the edge of the table can give it a designated spot that keeps the puzzle, and the breakfast plates, clear.
They may be stuck on twelve down, but Miso is in no hurry. A sunny kitchen, warm table and two favorite people nearby is all he needs to call the morning a success.
