Frank Split the Sandwich Down the Middle. He Forgot to Count Domino.

Bundled up against a crisp fall day, Frank in a knit beanie and puffy green jacket and Ruth in a cream cable-knit cardigan and scarf, the two are splitting a sandwich on a wooden garden bench. Frank is tearing it in half with great care, and Ruth is reaching for her share with a grin. Below them, Domino sits as straight as a little soldier, head tipped all the way back, eyes fixed on that sandwich with laser focus. Garden hoses, flower pots, and fallen leaves surround the bench in the cool afternoon light.

Dogs are experts at reading body language, and food handoffs are their favorite kind. Many learn that people sharing food often means crumbs might fall. If you want to share, plain bites of cooked chicken or turkey with no seasoning are usually fine for most dogs in small amounts, but plenty of sandwich ingredients are risky. Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and anything with xylitol can be toxic to dogs, and rich cheeses or deli meats are heavy in salt and fat. A better approach is to bring along a few dog treats so your pup can join the picnic safely. Teaching a calm sit or down while people eat is also a great skill for any dog. When in doubt about a food, talk to your vet.

Domino has clearly mastered the patient sit. Whether that earns him a bite of crust is entirely up to Ruth, and she looks like a soft touch.
