Grandma Odessa's Favorite Song Came On. Copper's Tail Took Over the Kitchen.
Grandma Odessa is laughing and looking down with such joy that you can almost hear the music. Her green cardigan swings as she shifts her weight, silver curls bright, one hand reaching down toward Copper. The Golden Retriever has his mouth wide open in a pink, panting grin, ears bouncing and his big plumed tail swept up behind him in mid-wag. A wooden spoon holder, a teakettle, a fruit bowl and a folded blue towel line the counter, and cheerful notes cover the refrigerator behind them. It looks like a tune just came on that nobody could sit through.
Golden Retrievers are playful, social dogs, and an indoor dance party is a nice way to burn off some energy on a rainy day. They were bred as retrievers, so they love active games and being with their people. Keep an eye on the floor, since slick kitchen tile can be hard on paws, and a few rugs or mats help with traction. Remember that big wagging tails can knock cups and plates off low counters. Short sessions of play with a breaks for water keep things comfortable. Exercise and attention also help prevent boredom, which can lead to chewing or barking. If your dog is older or stiff, talk to your vet about gentle activity that suits them.
The song will end, but the smiles are likely to stick around. Copper, for one, will be waiting for the next one.
