Grandma Odessa Pulled Out a 1,000-Piece Puzzle. Copper Pulled Up a Chair.
The jigsaw puzzle covers half the kitchen table, and most of the pieces are colorful blue, green and gold bits of what looks like a landscape. Grandma Odessa bends over it in a gray sweatshirt, silver hair trimmed short, carefully testing one piece against another. Across from her sits Copper, tall and serious on a woven chair, his chin tilted and his long red-gold ears hanging beside his face. His eyes look steadily down at the puzzle, as though he is trying to spot the missing corner. The sunny kitchen behind them has a stack of dish towels, a pot of aloe and a glass of water.
Jigsaw puzzles are a relaxed pastime that give the mind a gentle workout and are easy to do for as long as you like. A dog who wants to be part of it can be a good companion, but small puzzle pieces can be a choking hazard, so keep them off the floor and out of reach of a curious mouth. If a piece drops, pick it up before your dog does. Golden Retrievers are people-focused dogs that like to stay close and watch what is going on, so a chair beside the table suits them. Give them a chew toy or a snuffle mat nearby to keep them occupied, and offer a break for a walk.
Copper has not placed a single piece, but his confidence is unshaken. Grandma Odessa gives him a glance now and then, as if checking his opinion.
