Harold Held Out His Hand in the Kitchen. Bev Said Yes. Toffee Watched.

There is no music that we can see, but Harold and Bev are dancing anyway. They stand close in the sunny kitchen, her hand tucked in his, both wearing cream sweaters and both smiling softly. A window lets in a clear morning glow over the counter, a tea towel hangs from the oven door and a small plant sits by the sink. At their feet, Toffee stands with his ringed tail raised and his round face turned toward us with calm approval.

Dancing, even a slow sway in the kitchen, is a gentle way for older adults to stay active and connected. It helps with balance and mood, and it costs nothing. Just take care with floor surfaces, since tile and wood can be slippery, and keep a clear path. Cats, meanwhile, often weave around legs without a second thought, so watch your steps and avoid walking backward when your pet is close. A cat that sits calmly near music and movement is usually a confident, well-socialized one. If yours gets underfoot, try giving him a favorite spot at the edge of the room. Soft background music, if any, helps most cats stay relaxed, as long as the volume stays low and the floor stays clear of anything breakable.

Toffee has seen plenty of these dances and is not impressed by the footwork. His only job is to watch.
