Odessa Went Pumpkin Hunting. Onyx Tiptoed Through the Vines Beside Her.
The pumpkin patch is a tangle of dry vines and bright orange globes, and Grandma Odessa strolls through it in an olive jacket, gray scarf and glasses, hands tucked loosely at her sides. Close to her feet, Onyx walks low and quiet with his dark tail curled behind him, his eyes searching the vines. A porch with potted mums and a coiled hose waits at the back of the yard. The air feels crisp, and the light is the warm gold of early fall. Orange pumpkins dot the dirt in every direction, waiting for their moment.
Autumn decorations call for a bit of cat sense. Pumpkins are generally not harmful to cats, but moldy or rotting ones can upset their stomachs. Vines, stems and bits of decorations can be a choking risk, and candles in carved pumpkins are a fire hazard around curious paws. A short, supervised visit to a patch is fine, but keep your cat on a harness if he is outside. Devon Rex cats have thin coats, so cool autumn days can feel chilly for them, and shorter outings are kinder. Check his paws for burrs, and keep him away from fertilizer and pest sprays.
Odessa picks her pumpkin and Onyx picks his path. They are both in no hurry. A quiet walk in the cool afternoon is good for them both, and the patch is full of treasure.
