Odessa Put on Her Favorite Record. Onyx Curled Up to Listen.

A record turns softly on the turntable in the corner, a lamp glows warm and Grandma Odessa looks down with a gentle smile. She wears a cream cardigan with a small earring and her silver hair is neat and short. In her lap, Onyx has curled up on a knitted blanket, his big ears alert and his eyes on her face. A mug, a ball of yarn and a stack of books sit nearby, making the room feel like a cozy end to the day. The music fills the corners of the room, and for a while nothing else matters.

Music can be wonderful company, and many older adults find that favorite songs bring back warm memories. For cats, soft music at a low volume is usually pleasant, but turntable needles, cords and records can be dangerous if he explores. Keep the player on a stable surface and unplug it if your cat shows too much interest. Devon Rex cats are known for being cuddly, and they often choose a lap over the floor. A soft blanket on your lap gives him a place to settle. Watch his ears and tail, because a cat that flicks his tail or flattens his ears may find loud sounds too much.

Odessa hums along and Onyx purrs. It is a duet that needs no lyrics. The house is as calm as it gets.
