Odessa Went to Fix a Loose Fence Board. Onyx Arrived With a Stick.
A loose fence board, a hammer and a patient pair of hands are all Grandma Odessa needs. She kneels in her gray cardigan with the hammer raised, silver hair showing from under her glasses, while the old planks lean beside her. In the foreground, Onyx faces the camera with a long twig held crosswise in his mouth and his green-gold eyes wide. Behind them, a blue tarp, work boots and a few garden pots mark out the corner of the yard where the work is happening. The scene smells of cut wood and fresh dirt, and the repair is progressing slowly but surely.
Cats do like to carry things, and a stick can seem like a fine prize. Still, wood can splinter and puncture the mouth or throat, so it is better to offer a soft toy instead. Outdoor repairs also bring hazards like nails, screws and treated wood, so sweep up any loose hardware and keep your cat away from the work zone. A Devon Rex is clever and active, so he will probably try to help. Give him a job, such as a toy to fetch, and supervise any outdoor time. If you suspect he has swallowed something sharp, call your vet right away.
Odessa keeps hammering, and Onyx holds the stick. It is a teamwork project, whether the fence knows it or not.
