Odessa Opened the Paper to Read. Onyx Decided It Was His Bed.

The newspaper is spread wide, but there is not much room left to read it. Grandma Odessa sits in a patterned chair in her olive-green cardigan and round glasses, holding the paper up while Onyx curls into a neat black comma right on top of it, eyes closed and ears relaxed. A mug and a knitting basket sit on the side table, and the sunlit room behind them is gently cluttered with books and blankets. The afternoon feels as unhurried as the pages of newsprint.

Cats are famous for settling onto papers, laptops and books, and there are a few plausible reasons. A flat surface is warm and comfortable, the crinkle is interesting and sitting on the thing you are looking at is a good way to get your attention. A lap is even better because it combines warmth with company. Devon Rex cats in particular tend to seek out warm spots, since their short, wavy coat gives less insulation than thicker fur. If your cat takes over your reading time, a heated pad or a soft blanket on a nearby chair can be a nice alternative. And make sure you do not disturb a sleeping cat too suddenly.

Odessa will probably read the headlines again tomorrow. For now, the cat is clearly the day's most important news. Whoever wrote the headlines never had such a handsome reader.
