Domino Leapt for the Hose Spray While Gus Tried to Wash the Car

Water arcs from the hose and Domino rises to meet it. The pied French Bulldog stands on his hind legs with his front paws in the air, mouth wide open in a delighted grin and droplets sparkling around his face. Grandpa Gus, in a tan cap and green fishing vest, scrubs the hood of a dark car with a yellow sponge while aiming the stream with his other hand. A blue recycling bin, a fence, potted plants and a coiled hose make up the driveway scene behind them, cheerful and a little messy.

Playing in sprinkler and hose water is a popular summer game, and many dogs find it hilarious. For a Frenchie it can be a good way to cool off, since flat-faced dogs overheat easily. Keep the water at a comfortable pressure and aim away from his face, nose and ears. Never spray water directly into his mouth, because short-nosed dogs can inhale water. Car-washing products and runoff, including soap and wax, can be harmful if lapped up, so rinse the driveway when you finish. Antifreeze, which can leak from vehicles, is toxic and tastes sweet to animals, so mop up spills right away. Dry him off and offer fresh water after play.

Gus tries to keep his eye on the fender, but the audience in front of him is far more entertaining. Domino leaps again, and again, with all the joy of a dog who has found the best toy in the neighborhood. The car will get clean eventually. The two of them will be soaked, and nobody will mind.
