Domino Rode Shotgun in the Old Pickup Like a Seasoned Copilot

The old pickup has seen better days, and neither of them cares. Grandpa Gus sits behind the wheel with a relaxed smile, his white mustache bright against his tan face and his fishing vest pockets stuffed with gadgets. On the worn leather seat beside him, Domino sits tall like a copilot, his black collar snug, bat ears pricked and dark eyes looking straight ahead. Through the windows you can see cluttered shelves, hanging flannel shirts, boots and boxes, as if the truck were parked inside a workshop.

Car safety matters for dogs as much as for people. An unrestrained dog can be injured in a sudden stop, and he can also distract the driver. A harness that clips into a seat belt, or a secure travel crate, is the safest option, and dogs should never ride in the bed of a truck. Never leave a dog alone in a parked vehicle, especially a French Bulldog, because flat-faced breeds overheat very quickly, even on mild days. Bring water for the trip, take breaks and keep the windows open a little while you drive, but not so wide that he can jump out. Ask your vet if he gets carsick.

Gus turns the key, or at least he looks like he is about to. Domino doesn't mind waiting. A truck ride with a good friend is half the adventure, no matter where they are headed. The road is open, the afternoon is warm and the passenger seat has never been so well occupied.
