Grandpa Turned the Page. Pearl Had Already Claimed the Lap.
The newspaper is open, the coffee cup waits on the side table, and Grandpa is working his way through the morning's headlines with a calm, thoughtful frown. His glasses catch the soft window light. But the real star of the scene is Pearl, a curly white Poodle who has folded herself neatly across his lap with her face tucked against his sweater. Her eyes are shut, her ears fall in soft ringlets, and she looks like she has no intention of moving before the crossword is done. A knitted blanket and a cluttered side table complete the lived-in living room around them.
A lap-sized nap is a classic sign of trust. Dogs usually sleep most comfortably in places where they feel safe, and curling up against a favorite person is about as safe as it gets. Poodles tend to be affectionate and people-oriented, so they often prefer to stay in physical contact. If your dog likes lap time, a small blanket can keep both of you comfortable, and it helps to let a sleeping dog rest undisturbed whenever possible, since good sleep matters for dogs just as it does for us.
Grandpa has not turned the page in quite a while, and he doesn't seem bothered. The news can wait. A warm, snoozing Poodle is a perfectly good reason to read the same paragraph twice. Some mornings, slow is exactly the right speed.
