Under One Quilt by the Fire, Grandpa and Pearl Warm Up Together
The fire crackles low in the stone hearth while Grandpa sits wrapped in a patchwork quilt, his green cardigan tucked underneath. A contented smile lights up his face as he rests a hand on Pearl, the white Poodle snuggled against his side. Her curly head peeks out from the colorful squares of blue, rust, and cream. Shelves of keepsakes and a framed picture sit behind them, and the daylight outside the window looks cool and gray. It is the sort of scene that makes the whole room feel hushed and snug.
Fireplaces are lovely, but a few safety habits go a long way with pets. Keep a sturdy screen in front of the fire so a curious dog cannot get too close, and make sure she has room to move away if she gets warm. Dogs can overheat or get sleepy near strong heat, so a cool spot with water should always be available. Poodles have fine, curly coats that offer less insulation than people expect, so they often enjoy a snug blanket on chilly days.
Pearl and Grandpa have clearly found the coziest corner of the house. The quilt, the warm glow, and the steady crackle of logs make an afternoon where nothing needs to happen at all. Outside it can be as cold as it likes. The best chilly day plan is the one that involves a nap and a friend.
