Grandpa Dipped His Toes in the Lake. Pip Kept Watch Beside Him.
Grandpa has rolled up his trousers and let his bare feet sink into the cool lake, his eyes lowered with a soft, contented smile. Pip sits right at his side on the sun-warmed boards, ears forward and gaze fixed on him, as if waiting for her cue. The dock is old and weathered, and tree branches and the calm water stretch into the quiet distance.
Evening light turns the ripples gold, and the teal-and-black plaid of his flannel makes a cozy contrast with the pale boards. Pip's silky tan and steel-blue coat looks freshly brushed, and her small paws are planted neatly together.
Docks can be a wonderful treat for a small dog, but they require some caution. Gaps between boards can trap tiny paws, and a slip into the water can be frightening, so many owners use a harness with a secure leash and keep a close eye on their dog. Fresh drinking water helps, because lake water may contain germs or algae that can upset a dog's stomach. After a day by the water, dry her coat, especially if it is long, to keep her comfortable. If you are unsure about water safety for your dog, ask your vet.
The water laps, the planks creak, and Pip keeps her post. Some afternoons need nothing more than this. The sun sinks a little lower, the ripples spread, and nobody feels the need to say a word.
