Pip Sat Perfectly Still While Grandpa Fed the Backyard Birds
Grandpa holds his palm open with a few seeds, smiling at a handful of sparrows that have gathered around a little wooden feeder. Pip sits on the weathered bench at his elbow, ears high and eyes fixed on every flutter. The backyard glows with early evening light, a lantern hangs from a hook, and the fence behind them is draped in leaves.
Look at how still she is. Her tiny chin is lifted and her little body is practically vibrating with effort to stay put. Grandpa's red-and-black flannel and round glasses make him look like a man who has done this every evening.
Terriers were originally bred to chase small animals, so a Yorkie's interest in birds is perfectly natural. That instinct can be a challenge, so many people practice a calm command like sit or stay and reward good behavior with a treat. A leash or a safe fenced spot helps keep both birds and dog out of trouble. Birdseed can also upset a dog's stomach if eaten in quantity, so it is wise to keep her from snacking on spilled seed. Cleaning the feeder regularly protects wild birds from mold and germs too.
Today the birds eat in peace. Pip's good manners deserve a medal, and she knows it. Grandpa chuckles softly, and the sparrows go on with their supper, none the wiser about the small hero beside him.
