Grandpa Shoveled the Driveway While Pip Raced Through the Snow

Grandpa stands with his hands on a black snow shovel, his red buffalo-plaid shirt bright against the white yard. Pip charges through the fresh snow with all four paws flying, ears flat and eyes shining. A wintry driveway and a row of frosty bushes stretch behind them, and the cold air makes everything crisp.

The shovel has made a clean path, and Pip has made her own tracks right through the middle. Her blue-and-tan coat looks almost dark against the powder.

Snow can be thrilling for small dogs, but winter play needs care. Yorkshire Terriers have fine coats and little body fat, so they can chill quickly, and a warm sweater helps on short outings. Snow can ball up between toes, so check and wipe her paws afterward. Rock salt and ice melt can irritate paws and upset a stomach if licked, so rinse her feet and keep her away from treated areas. Keep outings brief and bring her in if she shivers or lifts her paws repeatedly. When in doubt, ask your vet.

The driveway will clear eventually. For now, there is a snowbank to conquer and a grin worth stopping for. Soon there will be a warm towel, a cup of something hot, and a very tired little dog. Winter mornings do not get much brighter than this one, shovel or no shovel.
