Pip Got Close to the Watering Can While Grandpa Tended the Flowers

AI imageyorkshire terriergardeningwatering can

Grandpa tilts a galvanized watering can over a bed of pink petunias, a bright smile on his face as a gentle spray falls. Pip leans in right beside the spout, nose wet, whiskers forward, clearly fascinated. His red plaid flannel and gray tee suit the quiet morning, and the house wall and garden shrubs frame the scene.

The blossoms are bright against the dark soil, and a few drops sparkle in the light. Pip's blue-and-tan coat catches the mist, and she looks like she is considering whether to drink or play.

Gardens are wonderful for dogs, though a few plants can be harmful. Some common flowers and bulbs, such as azaleas, lilies of the valley, and tulip bulbs, can make dogs sick, and fertilizers and slug bait are dangerous too. Check what you grow with a trusted pet-safe plant list or ask your vet. Watering cans and hoses are fun for dogs, but keep her away from standing water that might hold bacteria. A shady spot and a bowl of fresh water keep her comfortable while you work.

The flowers will bloom a little brighter by evening. Pip will probably consider that her doing too. Later there will be a little mud, a quick towel-off, and a very pleased gardener. A small dog beside a garden bed makes every flower look a little better, and Grandpa knows it.
